For a Collingwood Football Club charity event at Vanilla Lounge in Oakleigh, we used boom microphone stands to position the microphone securely and comfortably for the guest speakers. HOW TO SET UP A BOOM MICROPHONE STAND:

How to set up a boom microphone stand:

  1. Open the tripod legs fully and place the stand on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Loosen the main height adjustment knob, raise the centre pole to the required height, then tighten securely.
  3. Attach the boom arm to the top of the stand if it is not already fitted.
  4. Loosen the boom adjustment knob and extend the arm to the required length.
  5. Angle the boom toward the performer or instrument, then tighten the adjustment knob firmly.
  6. Screw the microphone clip or shock mount onto the threaded end of the boom. Use a thread adaptor if required.
  7. Insert the microphone into the clip and aim it toward the sound source.
  8. Connect the microphone cable and leave enough slack for adjustment.
  9. Run the cable along the boom and stand, securing it loosely with clips or hook-and-loop straps.
  10. Test the stand for stability before use.

Position one tripod leg in the same direction as the boom arm to reduce the risk of tipping. Keep the boom as short as practical, and don’t overtighten the adjustment knobs. Heavy microphones may require a counterweight or heavy-duty stand.
